Sermon:
After our Easter celebration Pastor Jim started a new series on Revelation. Today, he started at the beginning with a sermon on Revelation 1:1-8 titled “The Provisions of Revelation.” So introduced this idea, Pastor spoke to how Jesus describes himself as the Alpha and the Omega. Pastor thought of the alphabet, A-to-Z. What does that signify? He sees completion. The alphabet enable us to use language to communicate fully and completely. It is the same for Jesus. He has everything, and can communicate fully and completely with us. In Revelation He provides. Pastor explored this in three points.
To begin, Pastor Jim discussed how revelation provides a certainty. This chapter of the Bible is like all the other books of the Bible, God inspired. The message to John came from God. Moreover, it comes with a promise. A blessing to us if we read and apply these words in our life. But of course, as Pastor commented it is not just this book of the Bible that blesses us. Spending time in the Bible every day in study is the best start to a day.
Next, Pastor discussed how the book of Revelation provides security. It demonstrates God’s desires for good for the people that he speaks to. It describes how God gives grace and peace to those that know him. Also, perhaps more importantly in it, God tells us who He is, including describing the three persons of the Trinity, God the Father, God the Holy Spirit and God the Son. For the last part of this security, Revelation tells us who we are, kings and priests, with the ability to rule over us sin through His provision. All points that are most encouraging to us.
For his last point, Pastor Jim remarked that revelation provides an inevitability. Jesus will someday return. He is a blessed hope. In other places in the Bible, we learn about the rapture. In this section of revelation, Jesus mentioned that some people will be sad to see Him return, mourning His return. For them, it will be too late to embrace Christ. But for those of us who already believe and hope, it will be a wonderful thing if we are still alive at the rapture.
To conclude, Pastor Jim asked us to consider our need today. What type of Grace do we need? Do we need Jesus’s saving Grace or do we need his sustaining grace? Let us consider ourselves and respond accordingly.
