Bible Verses for Sunday Service August 06, 2023
Revelation 5:12
saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”
Announcements:
The deacons will meet at the home of Phil and Rosemary Witschi on August 17.
We have a pavilion reserved for a picnic on Sunday afternoon, August 27. We will meet there right after church and enjoy an afternoon of fellowship and recreation. Besides the fun, we could also have baptisms in the lake if anyone wishes. Please contact Pastor Jim if you want to be baptized.
With the approach of school starting, we need to focus on our children’s ministry that will begin in the fall. Again, we plan groups for preschoolers and elementary age children. In addition, we plan a teen group this year. We trust that all those who have served previously will consider serving again. Anyone who is interested in serving, please let Pastor or Gaylene know. August 30 at 6:30 PM is our organizational meeting, for an opening night of Sept 13.
We need to know who has church keys. If you have one, please put your name on the sheet in the foyer bulletin board, and list which key(s) you have.
Special:
Shepherd Bible Church member Jimmy Sutton sings “Henini (Here am I)” during the service, August 06, 2023. Jimmy sings after a contextual explanation and scripture reading by Pastor Jim Miller, Isaiah 6:1-8.
Sermon:
This Sunday, Pastor preached on Luke 10:1-20. He titled his sermon “Men on a Mission.” In his exposition on this section of scripture, Pastor Jim analogized a country mustering and evaluating its forces to Jesus preparing his disciples to go out into the world and be part of the harvest. He found that to be a successful member of Jesus’ team, you must first know Him and second have a heart of obedience to Him. Pastor chose to categorize these workers in three ways.
Firstly, the question of our identity is helpful. Jesus used agricultural language. We are laborers in all aspects of the Gospel: We sow, water (love) and harvest. Continuing the agricultural analogy, we are also lambs. So we are sheep among wolves, and therefore need our Shepherd.
Next, we must focus on the urgency of our call. Time is always short for the mission of the Gospel. We must be careful to appeal to the harvest in God’s way, offering God’s mercy, and warning of God’s judgment. In doing this, we can remind people that there has been no peace since the Garden of Eden. Moreover, God decrees levels of punishment for ignoring or disparaging His word.
Lastly, we should be joyful and confident in our certainty. Satan is a defeated enemy. As Jesus relates here, he fell from heaven in a bright flash, his activity there ending. But, in focusing on the positive, we can rejoice in our heavenly destiny. Our security in that Jesus keeps us, holds us in His hand. Also, that he is the conquering King, who has us listed in his book of life.
So bearing this in mind, Pastor urged us to see the Harvest around us, see the urgency of the call and let us commit to do our part.
