Sermon:

Pastor Jim spoke to us on Hebrews 13:25 in a sermon he titled “Availability of Grace.” He unpacked all that is in this short verse, firstly and by way of introduction, by remembering how that great preacher Charles Spurgeon saw it. Although a famous preacher, Spurgeon was a man of sorrows, suffering from depression. To encourage himself when he was down, he developed the analogy of a fish swimming in water, worrying about a drink. Spurgeon thought of himself as the fish, needing help, needing grace, but swimming in a river of grace. What was true for Spurgeon is true for us.

To begin while Pastor remarked that Grace is able to save us, it is important to remember what grace God provides is sufficient too. We experience grace given freely from God. We see it at work in our lives, and the lives of others, including our Christian brothers and sisters, the saints. We can also be grateful for the work of grace, Jesus’ work on the cross experiencing our sin and all the sin of everyone in the world. Another way Pastor explained this was to think of Grace as summarized in John 11:25-26, Grace is God Riches At Christ’s Expense.

Next, Pastor considered how Grace is available to help us. By thinking of what we know of where grace comes from, we can be confident in its ability to help us. Scripture is full of word pictures of God as ruler of the universe, sitting on his rightful throne in heaven considering us, and dispensing grace as we need it. This throne picture speaks of the power to help us. Also, this same picture of the throne speaks of the availability of grace to help us.

Lastly, Pastor noted in closing that grace is available, but we must be receive it. We must not ignore it or fail to ask. That is the closing admonishment of Hebrews, see that no one fails to obtain grace. Let’s make sure we do our part.
