Announcements:
Next Sunday, January 7, we will have a representative from Heart Cry missions society, Hunter Gately. He is the coordinator for the ministry in Eastern Europe and he will be giving us a report and challenge regarding the work being done there. We will have an opportunity to give to the ministry of Heart Cry.
It’s time to get everyone an updated church directory. Please provide us with any contact information for you that needs updating. Also, if you are not in the directory, we would like to have you listed. You can use the insert to provide your information and leave it on the foyer table.
You can also use the church update directory form to let us know how you would like to receive prayer chain requests and information. We send requests for prayer via email, text or phone.
In the foyer, on the bulletin board, we have a list of nominations for the church officers. You can nominate someone to serve until January 7. Before nominating anyone, please check with that person and Pastor.
Our annual business meeting will be on Sunday January 14, 24
Pastor and Gaylene greatly appreciate the gifts given to them for Christmas. They thank the Lord for the love and support given to them for Christmas, and all year through.
Sermon:
Today Pastor Jim spoke on what we should take into the New Year from Hebrews 2:1-4, in a sermon he titled “Essentials for Entering Another Year.” In these verses Pastor covered how the most important thing to take into the New Year is a meaningful relationship with Jesus. By way of illustration, he analogized how people treat gift cards to how we can treat Jesus. While perhaps the majority use gift cards as intended, some forget to use them, or simply can’t be bothered to use them. The card then expires. We don’t want to treat Jesus in this way. We don’t want to use Him, we want to take Him into the New Year with us. Pastor developed this idea in three points.
Firstly, we should be steadfast in staying close to Jesus. If we don’t we could drift away from Him. Therefore, we should make conscious decision to stay close to Him through out the year by remaining in His word.
Next, we should also be serious by being sensitive to sin. Pastor contrasted the word of angels to the w0rd of Christ as the writer of Hebrews did.
Lastly, we should be satisfied in seeing the greatness of our salvation. Nothing is better than Jesus. He is a great gift because what He offers is free, which is a great price to us. We can usefully remember the great price to Him. His gift is also true. Therefore, we should use this gift and apply its truths to our lives, those truths contained in Psalm 23.
