Sermon:
Pastor continued his review of the beatitudes in Matthew, 5:13-16, Jesus’ proclamation of the arrival of the Kingdom of God with a message titled “How to be an Influential Person.” These verses provide us principles for us live by in the world, powered by the Kingdom of God.
These verses are the salt and light verses. Active members of God’s Kingdom on Earth, are like salt and light. Salt being essential for living in Jesus’ time. Without salt, fresh food like meat and fish would spoil. But, Jesus’ commending us to be like salt has a warning too. What happens to salt that is no longer good for its purpose, preserving food? It is discarded, only fit for use on paths to keep down weeds.
Pastor illustrated this same idea with light. Obviously, light is required to see your way. But, if you are a light, what good are you if you are hidden, if the light is under a basket? Jesus wants his followers to show their light to others so that others may see what it is to be a follower of Jesus. Pastor made the point that this light gives us insight into ourselves and equips us to be that light to others. So let’s take these beatitudes to heart in our service to the Lord in God’s Kingdom here on earth now.
