Announcements:
The Awana kids will be racing their cars to race on Saturday, March 4. Check in begins at 10:30 and the races will begin around 11:00. The first race will be the Cubbies who will race their Hot Wheels cars. The Sparks will race next, with T&T to follow. We will serve lunch followed by the awards. Our estimate is that we will be done around noon. Thank you to all those who are helping.
This Friday before the Grand Prix, Pastor is offering time to test and tune the cars to get them ready for the race. As part of the tune, the Grand Prix staff will weigh the cars and help the children add weight. If you wish to take advantage of this tuning, please be there between 4 and 6PM.
A regularly scheduled deacons’ meeting is planned for March 16.
On April 20, LaVie will host 321 Improv, a Christian improv group. Laughter will fill that night, along fun and prizes. Everyone is welcome, but it is geared towards youth ages 11-18. While it is a fundraiser for LaVie, SBC will receive free tickets for their youth groups. Pastor Jim needs to know by Feb 28 how many tickets to request. You can find more information on the church bulletin board
Sermon:
Preaching from the Gospel of Luke, Pastor covered Luke 5:12-26 today, in a message titled “Miracles of Compassion.” In this section, Luke covers two miracles of healing, acts of compassion by Jesus. Pastor compared dissecting formaldehyde preserved frogs to the digital dissections done today to illustrate what is required for ministry. You cannot have a “hands off” approach with ministry, and Jesus certainly didn’t. In his compassion, he touched those regarded as untouchable like the leper healed in the first part of this today’s verses.
In thinking of Jesus’ ministry, it helps to see that ministry driven by Christ’s compassion for those around him. His response is not just emotional, a feeling, but provides real help to those in need. Look at the leper here. He had a hopeless diagnosis, no cure available. But, he was able to make a hopeful plea to to Jesus for a cure. Jesus responded with a compassionate touch, something no one else would do. That touch, through the miraculous power of Christ, healed the man, changed his life. He could show himself to a priest, make the required offering and reenter society.
In the next miracle in this section, healing of the paralytic, we also see compassion, the compassion of his companions. These companions recognized the man’s plight and did what he could do himself, brought him to Jesus to seek healing for him. That allowed Jesus to do what only he could do, forgive the man’s sins and heal him.
Pastor asked us to think whether we had experienced Christ’s compassion. If we had, are we showing that compassion to others? We should be hands on like Pastor stated in the introduction, be willing to get our hand’s dirty, in extend the compassion we received.
