Sermon:
Working his way through the gospel of Luke, Pastor talked on Luke 4:14-30 today. He titled the message, The Year of God’s Favor. In this scripture, Luke covers Jesus announcing that He was the Messiah in his home town of Nazareth, and crowd’s response. Jesus chose to do this by reading from Isaiah 61, the first two verses, but cut short the reading to only cover God’s grace, not judgment, which will occur later.
Pastor looked at Jesus’ announcement through two lens. In the first, Pastor looked at the offer of God’s acceptance contained in Jesus’ reading. It is good news to the poor, not just those materially without, but the poor in spirit too. Besides the poor, it is good news to the broken, those with broken bodies and broken spirits. Pastor reminded us of the women who was healed who had the bleeding problem that had troubled her for years. And, this announcement would mean good news to the blind. While Jesus would literally heal those physically blind, including one born blind, he also offered sight to those blinded by Satan. Lastly in the good news theme, it was good news to those in bondage, those bound by Satan in sin.
While all this good news was a reason to celebrate and embrace Jesus and His message, Pastor pointed out that this first audience of men rejected it, a tragedy. The crowd could only think of Mary and Joseph’s son, the carpenter. Jesus was met with doubt. How could this man be the messiah? More than that, he was met with denial, probably for pointing out that God had a message of hope for the gentiles too. Lastly, though, those doubting were met with a demonstration of the God’s power as their plan to kill Him was foiled through a miracle. Jesus passed through the crowd trying to throw him off a cliff.
In thinking about this first announcement, Pastor asked us to consider have we accepted all of Jesus and His message? Or is any part of us rejecting Him?
