Bible Verse for Sunday Service January 21, 2024
Revelation 19:6
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,
“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
the Almighty reigns.
Psalm 37:23-24
The steps of a man are established by the Lord,
when he delights in his way;
though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong,
for the Lord upholds his hand.
Announcements:
We meet after church today for a soup and salad luncheon and then have a meeting to follow. In the meeting we will elect officers for the coming year and discuss the church budget. We will also discuss possible projects for the coming year and adding to our monthly missionary support. Everyone is welcome to stay for lunch and attend the meeting.
The revised church directory is complete and ready. Be sure to pick up a copy and use it to keep in contact with one another. We’ve placed them on the foyer table.
Praying for one another is an important and influential task, and the church’s prayer chain is a way to keep informed on the needs you can pray for. The insert in the bulletin today gives everyone who requested to be on the list and how they wish to be contacted (either text, email or phone). If you want to change how you are notified, please let Pastor Jim know.
From the Runias: We would like to express our sincere thanks to your church for the prayer support and the generous financial gifts you have given to us again over this past year. We are so grateful for you and are so privileged to serve as your missionaries. For the next three weeks, we will be teaching another online media course to national students from Nigeria. Pray that God will enable them to learn the skills necessary to dub scripture videos into the languages in their country. Thank you for being a vital part in this ministry.
Sermon:
Today Pastor Jim spoke from Hebrews 10:19-23 in a sermon he titled “A One Another Assembly.” Pastor introduced his ideas on this scripture with an anecdote from the someone serving in the US armed forces comparing his fellow soldiers to his family when thinking of adversity he faced. Extending the analogy, we are a church family, a family of believers. In order to hold fast in adversity, we need one another. He explored these verses in Hebrews saying the same thing in two points
Firstly, Pastor remarked we should consider one another, thoughtfully, using all our skills. God gave us our minds, and all of our skills and talents. We need to use minds in considering one another. What are we mindful of in our relations with our brethren. Besides considering one another, we should have a ministry with one another. Pastor addressed this from Proverbs, reminding us that iron sharpens iron, and that death and life are in the power of the spoken word.
For the second point, Pastor Jim considered gathering with one another, like we do in service, and events after like meals. We must be connected. How would be minister to one another without gathering together? Hebrews addresses this as well. We are admonished to gather habitually. Pastor remarked how he developed good habits as a child going to church three or four times a week as child growing up in the house of his parents who had these same habits. He also warned how life events can break these good habits. Suppose you got sick, and watched church online. You get well and now have a habit of not attending and meeting together.
Another aspect of gathering Pastor considered is that it be purposeful. We can have in mind the purpose of looking after one another.
He concluded with a saying from 19th century Baptist theologian, Augustus Strong “A whole bunch of rods cannot be broken, though each in the bundle maybe broken separately.”
