Bible Verses for Service July 02, 2023

Psalm 32:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!

Announcements:

Again today we had excellent treats for Fellowship Sunday. As you enjoy these, please remember to ask your friends and nieghbors to join us each month. They won’t be disappointed with the refreshments.

We will meet for a deacon’s meeting on July 20 at 7PM at the home of the Witschis.

All are grateful and thank the Robinsons, Gary and Julie, for their work in mowing and maintaining the grass around the church. All the rain this summer has made it a challenge and we greatly appreciate their time and effort in keeping things looking nice.

Sermon:

Continuing in Luke, Pastor spoke to us on Luke 9:27-36, “A Mountain Top Experience.” In this section of Scripture, Luke describes Jesus transfiguration on the mountain top, and Peter’s response. Pastor analogized this with a reference for July 4th celebrations. Fireworks in heavens are beautiful, but they don’t compare to God’s glory demonstrated in the transfiguration. In discussing this mountain top experience, Pastor had three points, on the different aspects of it we should consider.

Firstly, we should note Christ’s appearance. Jesus transformed himself from recognizable human to a brilliant white light. Peter, and the other disciples, James and John, saw a difference in him. But, more importantly, this difference, the blinding white light indicated the divinity of Christ. What human can transform his or her appearance in this way?

Next, Pastor discussed what happened at the transfiguration. Jesus met with Moses and Elijah. He discussed his coming glorification through death and resurrection. These are certainly accomplishments of Christ. We see also that Christ’s passion was God’s plan, and that His crucifixion is our means of salvation.

For Pastor’s last point, he drew out attention to Christ’s authority in the transfiguration. Peter remarked about the Feast of Tabernacles, expressing a desire to remain on the mountain top in the experience. But God spoke to correct Peter. We should also listen to God for it is through listening that God corrects our foolishness. Pastor noted that besides listening to Christ we should also heed Christ.

In conclusion, we should think in terms of what is God saying to us today? Once we understand, our choice needs to be obedience. For a reminder on this topic, Pastor quoted Nate Saint: “Obedience is not a momentary option, it is a die case decision made before hand.”
