Announcements:

Steve started the announcements by letting us know that Jimmy who works in the control booth during service won several gold medals in the Big Sky State games.

Next Sunday we will have a short business meeting after the service to go over the decision to make one-time gifts to the missionaries that we support along with some new missionary organizations.

Steve also announced that he is a camp councilor at the Black Hills Baptist Camp for Junior Camp (4th through 7th grade), which runs this week, July 18-23. Next week, July 25-30 is Senior Camp for 8th through 12th grade. Don’t forget that camp scholarships are available.

Sermon:

In preparation for preaching a sermon on our citizenship in the United States, Pastor had preached on Philippians 3 on June 26th. And then events intervened. The airline changed Pastor’s flight, and Jim Rooney preached on that day instead. Now Pastor and Gaylene returned from their vacation, this Sunday, Pastor picked up where he left off and preached the sermon on our citizenship that he originally intended for July 3rd, the  sermon titled “A Perfect Nation,” on Philippians 3:17-21.

In preaching on “A Perfect Nation,” Pastor reminded us that every believer has dual citizenship, one here on earth and one in Heaven. In this respect, we are “strangers and pilgrims” here. Pastor presented the perfect nation idea around three main points.

First, a heavenly nation has leaders. In considering these leaders, we should pay attention to the quality of the leader because we should only follow good leaders who follow Christ. This is critical in the sense that leaders are influencers, providing a pattern or example. Is the leader a good example?

Second,  a heavenly nation has enemies. We should not be surprised by this given what Jesus told us. We shouldn’t be surprised if the world hates us as it hated him first. So we should expect antagonism, and not be surprised at their perversion. We know that ultimately they will be destroyed.

While we can sometimes be disheartened over our enemies, we must remember that a heavenly nation has a future, a glorious one. The Bible tells of our future home and how we will get there if we are alive on the Lord’s return. So we must keep this perspective of passing through, and keep our eye on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
