Sermon:
With the celebration of America’s independence on the 4th, Jim Rooney gave a brief history of the Christian nature of the original settlers at one of the two colonies, and William Bradford’s role. Jim explained how the Mayflower compact lead the pilgrims to lay out the colony like God instructed the Israelites to set out the tents around the tent of meeting. He especially discussed the role of William Bradford. After this historical interlude, Jim preached on Genesis 24 and Psalm 49:6-9.
While Genesis 24 tells the story of Abraham getting a wife for his son Isaac through his servant from his homeland, Jim drew our attention to the servant’s fantastic plan to find the right woman, relying on God. Of course the chapter covers how God delivers in providing Rebekah at just the right time, and with the right words to show she is the chosen one for Isaac. Jim marveled at how God organized this, and more importantly, asked us to consider what such organization means for us today. God is control of the Universe and as Pastor recently covered in a series on the Sermon on the Mount, He is interested in extending his reach in the world by making us agents in the Kingdom of God, here and now.
