We look forward to an exciting week of ministering to children. The theme is built around the truth of the battle between Christ’s Kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness which we must face and do battle with. The kids will learn how they can be part of God’s Kingdom through salvation in Christ and be equipped with the armor of God to become Keepers of the Kingdom who stand strong in today’s battle for truth.VBS runs from 9AM to 11:45AM.
La Vie’s Baby Bottle Campaign, themed this year as “Change for Hope” runs from May 14 (Mother’s Day) through June 18 (Father’s Day). You can give online, but we will place a large baby bottle in the foyer where you can place your gift. The La Vie pregnancy center provides free and low-cost services to the women in our community. La Vie’s mission is “To empower individuals to embrace hope by providing loving, compassionate care for those facing unplanned pregnancies.”
John and Judy Klier came forward last week to join the church. We want to welcome them into our church and pray for God’s continued blessing on them and us as we serve together.
Sermon:
Still in Luke, Pastor preached on Luke 9:10-17, “Feeding a Multitude.” Luke, in this section, covers the only miracle of Jesus that appears in all four gospels, the feeding of 5000. Pastor introduced this through relating how as a small child his mother used to bake bread for him. He thought of the little boy’s lunch, five loaves and two fishes that Jesus multiplied in this miracle. Besides the wonder of Jesus’ work, Pastor asked us to consider what this very familiar story says about Christ, and the challenges we face. His sermon covered three aspects of this very famous miracle.
For the first point, Pastor described how Christ showed his compassion for the multitude. Many would hide from all these people, especially with their cries for help and healing. However, Christ was patient and understanding of them, even their need for food. Christ’s concern illustrates He cares for our total needs from understanding that we are people with three aspects, body, mind, and spirit.
Next, Pastor described Christ’s actions as a challenge to the disciples. What were they going to do feed all these people in such a remote place. His action illustrated the disciple’s focus on what couldn’t be done. They didn’t have money to feed them. However, Christ instructed them, reminding us to do what He tells us. These instructions still apply today. Are we listening to what Christ has for us?
Concluding, Pastor focused on Christ’s creation of the bread and fishes to feed all of the 20,000 people. He multiplied the the little boy’s lunch and fed everyone. Christ made sure that they had enough, the bread and fish satisfied. What Christ did for the multitude, He can do for us.
Besides the idea of our physical needs being met, we must remember that Christ said to the multitudes a little later about who He himself was bread in the figurative sense. Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. Just as the bread was multiplied and made available to anyone, so it is for anyone today. Let us not pass up this great offer of Himself in all His aspects as we live here and now.
