Bible Verse for Sunday Service Service June 09, 2024
Matthew 19:13-15
Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” And he laid his hands on them and went away.
Announcements:
Monday through Friday, this week, June 10-14, 9:00 – 11:45 AM, in our VBS we will be going on a “Great Jungle Journey.” Children will go on a jungle cruise with seven ports of call. At each port, they will learn about a biblical event that has shaped our world, and can determine our eternal destiny. Each day features music, games, crafts, refreshments, Bible memory and an exciting Bible lesson each day. Be sure your children attend each day and bring their friends with them. Fliers and registration information are available on the foyer table.
Final VBS decorating happens today, right after church. If you can help, please stay and do so. We will provide Chili and grilled hot dogs.
LaVie’s Baby bottle campaign runs through Father’s Day, June 16th. We can support LaVie in its work at its clinic providing compassionate medical care for early pregnancies. Funds donated during this Spring campaign go to assisting women with unplanned pregnancies through education and services. All of this is life affirming. We will host the baby bottles in which you can place your donation.
With the theme of VBS, and its importance, Pastor provided an anecdote and quote from DL Moody. “At a certain meeting two and a half people were converted to Christ. A friend asked if he meant, two adults and a child. The facts were just the opposite two children and an adult. When a child is led to Christ, a whole life is saved!”
Sermon:
Speaking again on Hebrews, Pastor Jim preached on Hebrews 12:18-29 in a sermon he titled “Come to the Mountain.” In wanting to contrast what is unshakable with what we have here, Pastor remarked the only natural disaster he had not experienced was an earthquake. In several places in the Bible, God talks about shaking to world, sometimes to complete destruction to replace with a new heavens and earth that are unshakable. Today’s passage in Hebrews is one example. Pastor explored this in three points.
Firstly, he reminded us we should fix our minds on the certainty of God’s word. He has spoken to us clearly. God does not hide the ball. We have clear instructions from Him from heaven. Some of those instructions are warnings about the consequences of bad behavior, behavior against His law. For an example, we have Noah. God warned. Only Noah paid heed.
Besides having clarity in communication between us and God, we have the certainty of His word. In this section, the writer of Hebrews reminds the reader about the shaking of the world in the past, during the Exodus and the giving of the Law. Also, God promises a shaking in the future of such a magnitude all the earth and the heavens will be burned up, destroyed. And today is no better. Every day, now, we see the shaking of our world in new ideas on things like our sex that are not in accord with God’s word.
Lastly, Pastor asked us to consider our response to this shaking. He remarked that such shaking should lead to sincerity in worship in our time here on earth. But to does so, we have to focus and use the grace that we have received. God requires in worshiping Him, we worship in grace. As this is the only way, we worship in truth as we have no righteousness of our own. Using grace to worship requires us to have a right view of God, to respect Him as God, and to be grateful to Him for all He has done for us.
To send us on our way for the week, Pastor reminded us that we should expect shaking in our world, and the only thing that will remain in the shaking is things done for Christ. Let’s make sure we have rewards in Heavens.
