Bible Verse for Sunday Service June 15, 2025

Genesis 22:1-18

After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

Sermon:

After concluding his series on Revelation 2, and in honor of Father’s Day, Pastor Jim preached on Genesis 22:1-18 in a sermon titled “The Making of a Man of Faith.” In this chapter, we Abraham tested by God. Would he give up the thing that perhaps he loved more than anything, his one and only son if asked by God? He passed the test of his faithfulness, and the Bible refers to us who believe in Jesus for our salvation as his spiritual sons. Pastor covered this chapter in two points.

In his first longer point, Pastor explored the idea that Abraham provides an example for us to walk by faith. In that example, Pastor reminded us that testing is part of our walk with God. Thinking of Abraham, he pasted many tests, including this one. But, he didn’t pass them all. So, he had a mixed review, yet he was still God’s man to build a nation out of. Pastor also noticed that testing involves what is precious to us, perhaps most precious. When God spoke to Abraham, he remarked that Isaac was his only son. Another aspect of testing is that it shows our faith in God. Who or what is our God. Is it Jesus? Or, perhaps we have an idol or too that is the God we actually worship. Lastly under testing, Pastor remarked that the testing here already shows what God already knew. God picked the right man.

A second point here relates to the sacrifice. The Lord provide the lamb for us to be received by faith. For Abraham, it was a ram caught in thickets. But, for us it is Jesus. But, the death of the ram here is a substitutionary death, the ram rather Isaac. Jesus rather than me. Surely, that is a great comfort to us. Another aspect of the sacrifice here was Isaac’s willingness to die, just like Christ was for us. And because we embrace, and accept that substitutionary death, we have a certainty for our future.

To close, Pastor challenged us, have we passed this on to our children or our grandchildren?
