Proverbs 20:7
The righteous who walks in his integrity—
blessed are his children after him!
Announcements:
We want to wish all the fathers who are here today a very happy Father’s Day. We wan to honor you for your role as father to your family and for all the hard work, sacrifice and love you have given to raise your family. Thank you for your leadership, your devotion and your prayers.
We had a great week in Vacation Bible School. On average, 38 children showed up each day. On Friday 43 came. Children’s Hunger Fund greatly benefited from the collection. Most important, two children accepted Christ. We thank all who helped, including the help from Valley Baptist Church as well as many volunteers from our church. Thank you Natasha Zabel for her leadership and many long hours over many days spent decorating and organizing this important children’s ministry.

Sermon:
Taking time to honor fathers, Pastor Jim preached on Psalms 37:23-31 in a sermon he titled “Descriptions of a Good Man.” He used the example of the film “Saving Private Ryan” to illustrate our desire as men to be good men and to wish that for other men. But what is a good man? We need to explore that from the Lord’s perspective. Scripture always instructs, especially this passage from Psalms. Pastor explored it with us under three headings.
To start, Pastor noted that scripture here speaks to us about the path through life of a good man. This path is no accident as the Lord prepares the path and asks us to trust Him as we walk it. And we should in that scripture also teaches us that if we fall, or fail, the Lord will lift us up. We can trust in the Lord that a fall, a mistake, a sin does not condemn us who are in Him.
Next, Pastor looked at the provision of good man. As a man works and earns money, he provides for those around him, primarily his duty to provide for his family. Paul comments in 1 Timothy that a working man with resources who fails to provide for his family is worse than an unbeliever. He also share with others. Pastor reminded us that this best accomplished through a plan. Giving is not a matter of is there anything left over, but a thoughtful plan in advance.
Lastly, Pastor asked us to consider the permanence of a good man. He spoke the famous exercise of tracing the descendants of a good man, Jonathan Edwards versus some criminal of that era. Stark is the difference. Edwards descendants included many good men who helped American society in many ways. For the criminal, it is a depressing litany of moral failure and expense to society. So as a good man learns to walk with the Lord, it leaves a lasting impression. Also what he says is revealing.
It all begins, becoming a good man by accepting the Lord.
