Sermon:
Jim Rooney spoke for Pastor Jim today. He related that his recent focus in Bible study had been live of one particular apostle, Thomas. Jim surveyed what Scripture revealed about Thomas from his selection as one of the twelve to his earning the epithet, doubting. In recounting what we know of Thomas’ life as an apostle, Jim was struck by the way that he would have seen, even participated in the feeding of the 5000. Also, he was in the boat when Jesus walked on water. Lastly, he saw Jesus put back on the ear of the high priest’s servant when Peter foolishly cut it off.
Yet, in all of this, what is Thomas best known for, it is being absent from the upper room when Jesus visited the 10 disciples in person. Although all the apostles told him that they had all seen Jesus, touched Him, eaten with Him, Thomas refused to believe them. He famously commented he would only believe if he was able to insert his body into the holes in Jesus’ body made by the crucifixion process.
Jim wanted us to consider our relationship with Jesus in light of Thomas’ experience, which teaches you can know an awful lot about Jesus without following Him. With this concern of his in mind, Jim challenged us to go to that place in our hearts were only we can go where we can meet Jesus and make sure we have connected with Jesus, believe in Him on that level. If we have not, Jim stated he was ready to discuss that with you so you do have Jesus as the Lord and Savior of your life.
