Announcements:
The offering for La Vie concluded, and what a success it was. Our church donated $598. Pastor requested that we pray for this ministry in light of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and the threats to pregnancy counseling services like La Vie.
In the foyer, you will find information regarding two camp at the Black Hills Baptist Camp. Junior Camp, 4th to 7th grade is July 18-23 while Senior Camp for 8th through 12th grade. The camp is located in the Black Hills a few miles east of Four Corners, WY. Please review if interested and let Pastor know. The church has Bible Camp scholarships available.
We need more children’s church leaders, one or two more to help out. Please let Paula know if you can help.
Lastly, we have news from the missionaries that we support. Nancy Burns in Peru, the Runias in Papua New Guinea and the Pearsons who announced their retirement. In this latter case we will be discontinuing our support as the Runias leave the missionary field and selecting other missionaries to carry the word of God to the unreached.
Sermon:
In preparation for next week’s sermon about our citizenship in light of the upcoming Independence Day, July 4th, Pastor preached on the verses before that concept is addressed in Philippians 3. Today’s sermon was on “A Sports Analogy to a Spiritual life. To start Pastor provided an anecdote from his own experience in high school track. He had started a race was running well, but didn’t notice any runners around him so he stopped only to have the other competitors pass him. His uncertainty caused him to lose the race when he could have won it. Also Pastor noted that Paul often uses sports analogies like boxing, wrestling and running a race to receive a prize. Focusing on this last analogy, Pastor explored the race analogy.
In his first point, Pastor pointed out the race is not over until we are dead. So long as we are dissatisfied with ourselves (1 John 1:9-10), and wish to improve our walk with the Lord, we should keep running. What will help us is if we have a determination to fulfill our purpose, which is to be witnesses to Him, more like Him. We want to reproduce His character in our lives.
For the second point, Pastor reminded us, like he did in his opening anecdote about his race that we must focus on the goal. Now in this focus, Pastor explored the various aspects. He advised us that we should have a single focus, giving the example of Mary and Martha (Luke 10:41-42). Besides singularly focusing, we should be focusing on moving forward (Luke 9:62). Lastly in thinking about how to focus we should have a heavenly focus.
The last aspect of the sport’s analogy Pastor presented was the idea of our pace. It is essential to maintain our pace, not give up or back slide. So Let’s keep this sport’s analogy in mind for our spiritual life, treating it as a race to win until the Lord call us home.
