Bible Verse for Sunday Service Service June 30, 2024

1 John 4:10-11

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Special: Shepherd Bible Church Special June 30, 24 “Statue of Liberty”

In honor of the upcoming Independence Day Holiday, we were blessed by the quartet of the Millers and Suttons singing “Statue of Liberty.” The video is available below, or through this link. Written by Neil Enloe, the song beautifully compares and contrasts the Statue of Liberty to Christ and His sacrifice on the cross. You can read a moving account of how this song came to be here. It was made popular by many performers, including The Gaithers.

Sermon:

Pastor Jim spoke to us on Hebrews 13:4-6 in a sermon he titled “Biblical Values.” Discussing why the Susan B Anthony coin failed Pastor offered that it was because it was too similar to a quarter. An average American couldn’t tell the difference. Can that same average American tell the difference between us and how we behave and the world around them? By sticking to our Biblical values and living them out in truth and love, we can light against the dark. In these verses from Hebrews, the author described two values, marriage and money, where can shine. Pastor spoke on both.

Our view of marriage is the first way to illustrate Biblical values in our lives. We can honor it as God’s plan as outlined in Genesis. We can live that plan the way God intended. We can also look at the other side. How His plan is dishonored through man’s disobedience. We can have this as a motivating factor in helping us stick to His wise and kind plan. We don’t want to bring shame on Him. And, we will better be light and stand out in our society by honoring Him. We don’t under and circumstances want to stand out as “Christians” who are hypocrites.

Similarly, our view of money should reflect our Biblical values. Too many people are trapped by the love of money, which Jesus and Paul specifically warn us about. It is the root of all evil. A Christian should use the money he or she receives, but not love it. Sometimes, we fall into the trap of coveting what others have purchased through the money they have. But, we need remember that this desire to covet is not satisfied through worldly goods. A person coveting just wants more. Freedom from this comes from being satisfied in our relationship with the Lord. Someone firm in the Lord’s love, won’t want something someone else has. Part of understanding money is understanding that it along with everything good is a blessing from the Lord. Money is limited, but He is not.

To close Pastor brought this theme of the contrast between the Old and New Testaments. In the Old, behavior is prohibited, you shall not. But, here in Hebrews and in many other places in the New Testament, we are exhorted positively. So, let’s take this to heart and be good walking, talking, living, breathing advertisements for Jesus.
