Sermon:
Pastor continued his review of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6:1-8, Jesus’ proclamation of the arrival of the Kingdom of God with a message titled “Proper Motives for Church Goers” In these verses Jesus explains how to give and pray to God. Of paramount importance to God is not how much we give, when we give, or how we give, in other words the externals of giving. It is the heart, our motives that are important. Jesus illustrates this by finding fault with the Pharisees giving practices, which seemed to designed to receive worldly recognition for giving. Jesus sees the same wrong focus in praying, and corrects that too. Another way to think about giving is that it is a form of worship, and God alone regulates the worship of Himself.
Having explained Jesus’s concern for giving, our motives, Pastor asked up to examine our own motives for giving. We must beware of the wrong motives, worldly recognition. We must also be sure that we have the right motives. Sometimes you can give to gain something from others. Pastor used the example of him giving in church to find his father the usher was collecting offerings. We must never give to receive the praise of others, especially spiritual praise. If we do give with the correct heart, Pastor reminded us we are often rewarded by God for having these right motives. Lastly, Pastor introduced how these same principles to apply to prayer, something that he will explore next week in further detail.
For his closing thought, Pastor asked us “Do we have joy in our giving?,” we should examine our hearts this week.
