Sermon:
Today, Pastor Jim continued preparing us for a new pastor by preaching on Titus 3:4-7 in a sermon titled “God’s Action in Our Salvation.” Switching from the qualifications to be pastor, Paul now covers salvation, and how all three persons of the Trinity are listed in these verses. Pastor began by describing as a child, as is typical, he had an imperfect understanding of the Trinity. But, in these verses, the three different roles of each person of God have different aspects in salvation. Pastor explored them in four points.
Firstly, God rescues us. He comes to us while we are in danger, eternal danger and saves us from that danger. It is important to realize that when he does that he is dealing with us by coming to us in our sin. This illustrates a big contrast between and us and God. Why did he do that, dealing with a sinful person. It is because He loves and, came to us in His love. That famous verse John 3:16 demonstrates that for all the world to see. In that love, it is very important to see Jesus’s work on the cross, his death for our sin.
Next, we come to the work of the Holy Spirit. The Father planned our salvation, and the Son purchased it. What does the Spirit do? Pastor put the Spirit’s work under the heading of God regenerates us, gives us life. After all regeneration means to be born again or born from above. Before salvation we have no spiritual life, no understanding of spiritual truth, and no real ability to bring any kind of change to the world. All these changes to us happen because of the work of the Spirit. He is that breath of life that makes us life spiritually. You could say that he gives us a bath. The Holy Spirit is like water and that he cleanses us from guilt and condemnation.
Besides regenerating us, we can say that God renews us also. This is another ministry of the Holy Spirit, the ability to live out that new life we’ve been given by God. We can think of this as provision of a new life coming through salvation. After all, we are new creation in Christ and the old things have passed away But, perhaps more importantly, we have the power for a new life. The Holy Spirit is within us enabling us to carry out Jesus’s moral law.
Lastly, Pastor explaining that God renames us. Our salvation comes a new name, heirs. A member of a new family with a new inheritance that awaits those within that family. As a member of that family, we have a hope for eternity. We recall that our names are written in the lamb’s book of life. We also have help for today. God will not abandon His children to walk through life alone. He’s with us every step of the way.
To conclude, we should remember that we have a great God, and he has given us a great salvation. God, the Father planned it in eternity passed. God, the Son came to the Earth to provide it to us by his work on the cross. God the Spirit does the work of convicting us to our need, and drawing us to the point of decision. We have a great God let’s give the adoration and love He deserves and desires from us.
