Sermon:

Today, Pastor Jim continued preparing us for a new pastor by preaching on Titus 2:9-10 in a sermon titled “Our Faith at Work.” This portion of Titus Paul gave instructions to Titus on how those who work should act in church. He addressed slave owners and also slaves. Today the modern equivalent is similar to the employer/employee relationship. Pastor explored the advice pole offered in two points.

Firstly, Pastor looked at the instructions that Paul gave Titus regarding our work. Pastor remarked that at the time that Paul wrote to Titus approximately 30% of the Roman empire was slaves. Therefore, it is likely that Titus’s church had many people in it who were slaves. In beginning the discussion, Pastor remarked that the work relationship involves an authority. This is similar to our relationship in church and that we are under an authority, God. The work relationship also involves acceptance. In order to work effectively, we must accept that authority, and be obedient. Next, the relationship also involves an attitude. To work well we must not talk back or complain. Instead, we must do all things to the glory of God as we work. Lastly, in the section, work involves an assurance. We can think of our assurance in the church as the assurance from our master, one that we can trust.

The next aspect of these verses that Pastor discussed centered around the idea of an incentive regarding our witness. Another way to put this is, who are we working for, we should focus on that. We work for God. Pastor described our goal as having a life that will silence the opponent. In other words, a Christian should be comparable to a walking billboard that is advertising Christianity in a good way. We could also say that our life would beautify the gospel. Perhaps our life as workers would be like a beautiful jewel adorning fine clothes.

To conclude Pastor reminded us that the workplace can be a mission field. Not that we go around proselytizing at work, but that there we can be an effective witness for the Gospel.
