Bible Verses for Service May 28, 2023

Memorial Day

Announcements:

Next Sunday is Fellowship Sunday and we will be dismissing Sunday School early to have a time of refreshments and fellowship before church. If you don’t come to Sunday School, come a little earlier and enjoy some special treats.

Vacation Bible School, June 5-9, 9AM to 11:45AM. Theme: Keepers of the Kingdom. Pastor played the video for the program at the start of service:

We look forward to an exciting week of ministering to children. The theme is built around the truth of the battle between Christ’s Kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness which we must face and do battle with. The kids will learn how they can be part of God’s Kingdom through salvation in Christ and be equipped with the armor of God to become Keepers of the Kingdom who stand strong in today’s battle for truth.VBS runs from 9AM to 11:45AM. As usual, we need people to help so please let Natasha know if you can give of your time that week.

We will be finishing up with decorating for VBS and would welcome any help setting things up. For lunch, the church will be providing sub sandwiches and ask that everyone bring either a salad, chips or a dessert to share.

La Vie’s Baby Bottle Campaign, themed this year as “Change for Hope” runs from May 14 (Mother’s Day) through June 18 (Father’s Day). You can give online, but we will place a large baby bottle in the foyer where you can place your gift. The La Vie pregnancy center provides free and low-cost services to the women in our community. La Vie’s mission is “To empower individuals to embrace hope by providing loving, compassionate care for those facing unplanned pregnancies.”

Sermon:

Still in Luke, Pastor preached on Luke 9:1-11, “Training During Life’s Transitions.” In this section, Luke relates a very important development in Jesus’ ministry. Up to this point, Jesus has been doing miracles and the apostles are with him. After this point, Jesus sends them out to do the work he was doing. He also spends most of his time now discipling the apostles rather than having a public ministry. Pastor recognized this as a transition or change and chose to focus on that change, what we can learn through three points.

Firstly, Jesus provides resources for our task, power and provision. He modeled for the apostles what to do and how to do it, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Besides providing the Holy Spirit, Jesus explains that we should be content in what he has provided, not relying on ourselves to provide anything in doing the work He has commanded. He counseled the apostles to take the bare minimum, just the clothes on their backs.

Next Pastor advised that we will see the results of our task, just like the apostles did, acceptance and rejection. Some people will accept God’s word with joy, and the apostles were to stay with these people, live with them until it was time to move on. However, some, like Herod, rejected God’s work through the apostles and will reject God’s word from us too. Our job is to be a faithful witness for Christ. We should never retire from this, but we might move on from people and situations were we are rejected.

Lastly, Pastor remarked on how Jesus provided timely but temporary rest for his apostles when they returned from the mission he sent them on. In the passage, Jesus takes them to Bethsaida. However, the rest the had was short as the multitudes soon came and found them. So we should enjoy God’s gifts while we can. Pastor reinforced this with a quote “if you don’t come apart for a while, you will come apart after a while.” We should get this rest to be an effective servant.
