Sermon:
Today Pastor continued in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ proclamation of the arrival of the Kingdom of God with a message titled “The Parable of the Right Path” on Matthew 7:13-14, where Jesus in drawing to a close on His sermon and so moves to compare His way with the way of the world. Jesus uses a parable of two paths. Pastor introduced this topic by telling a short story about the leader in a cross country race that chose the wrong path to run. Many race participants followed him. Only a small number chose the correct path.
Firstly, Pastor asked us to consider the decision regarding the path we take. This is way of emphasizing the importance of our initial decision to choose Jesus, to follow him. That is the decision that sets us on the right path. We move off the broad path that leads to destruction.
Second, he asked us to reflect on the differ demands of the two paths. Scripture warns us of this. In the world you will have tribulation, John 16:33. So in choosing this path we must expect trouble along the way. Pastor compared it to a journey down the road to East Rosebud lake. Arriving at the lake, it is worth it. But, along the way you will have problems of potholes and a rough road.
In summing up these thoughts on Jesus’s explanation how we should pray, Pastor reminded us that once we have taken these concepts into our hearts, we should put them into practice by committing to prayer regularly with the right heart and in the manner instructed by our Lord.
Another way of thinking about these two paths is the popularity of them. Pastor remarked that the disciples noticed the popularity of the path Jesus chose, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” Luke 13.23. This is the same as the idea that Pastor used to introduce the sermon, being popular doesn’t mean that you’ve chosen the correct path.
Lastly, Pastor asked to consider the two paths, the two choices in terms of where these paths lead, heaven and hell. Additionally, he pointed out that people tend to think that they can make these choices later. But, what if your life ends earlier? A motorcyclist was killed on Shepherd Rd just last week. So we need to consider our choices and make good decisions today.
