Bible Verses for Sunday Service May 1, 2022

Proverbs 1:8-9

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,
and forsake not your mother’s teaching,
for they are a graceful garland for your head
    and pendants for your neck.

Announcements:

Today Pastor honored all the Mothers in attendance through the reading of scripture, through public recognition, through a small gift, a carnation and through a sermon commending them and who they are. Motherhood was also the focus of next announcement, the importance of the work of La Vie, providing counseling and support, life affirming options to pregnant women. We can support that work through its baby bottle campaign. You can give by placing a donation in the bottle, or by using an envelope so you get a receipt. Lastly, you can donate online. Langdon Smith graduates from Shepherd High School on May 22 at 11 AM with a reception for him held at 6005 Pleasant Hollow Trail between 2-5 PM. It was mixed emotions that Steve announced it was Mae’s last Sunday at Shepherd as she prepares for her wedding, which will be held at 1PM on May 28 at the Old Armory, 320 1st Ave E, Williston, ND 58801. If you plan on attending, please see the invitation on the bulletin board, and RSVP if you plan to attend. Our ministry focus for children is now Vacation Bible School. Steve gave a passionate endorsement of VBS, how much he was in love with the program and the kids. He invited the church to come on down to this year’s VBS where the theme is “Zoomerang,” and is slated to run between June 6 through the 10th. You can attend a VBS leadership meeting at the church on May 25th at 6:30PM.

Sermon:

Today Pastor took a break from his series on Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ proclamation of the arrival of the Kingdom of God to honor mothers with a message titled “The Matter of Motherhood,” based on a selection of proverbs. Pastor addressed motherhood in three ways. Firstly, he discussed a mother’s duties, the most important of which is giving children direction, and devotion. If a mother has done this duty well and God works with the mother and the child, in his second point, Pastor discussed how motherhood is reflected in a child’s decision regarding his or her mother. Does the child heed her and honor her. Pastor reminded us that this obligation regarding our mothers runs all of our lives, not just when we are children. In his last point, Pastor spoke of the joy of motherhood, the delight any mother would feel in seeing a child grow to an adult, one she taught to love the Lord and have that faith carry the child through to adulthood, and sustain him all of his or her life. Pastor illustrated this point with a quote from Winston Churchill who responded to request that he review a list of teachers who influenced him by saying You have omitted to mention the greatest of my teachers—my mother.”
