Sermon:
Pastor Jim preached on several verses in 2 Corinthians 8 & 9 in a sermon he titled “Thanksgiving is… Giving.” Breaking apart the word is the key to understanding Thanksgiving. It giving thanks. Recalling his time growing up in church Pastor recalled his Sunday school teacher helping him understand that giving thanks was more than a duty. He explained these ideas in two points.
Firstly, he explained that it is important to have examples in giving, which the Bible abounds. Picking the Macedonians, he noted that they demonstrated their generosity in their poverty. They gave while having nothing to spare. Pastor connected this to Jesus’s giving to us. In His poverty he made us wealthy with his grace and our salvation. He gave up everything in Heaven so we can have it all.
Second, Pastor asked to look at the results of giving. For example, what were the results of the Macedonians gifts to the poor starving Jews in Jerusalem? Most obviously, these people’s needs were met. They were starving due to the bad harvest. Now they had money to buy food. But, that is not all. God was thanked, and praised. Thanksgiving was given by the Jews for the blessing of having their needs met through God’s intervention. Simply put, our gifts enable others to give thanks. Another benefit that flows from this gift is the church is unified. Churches in Macedonia are connected to the churches in Jerusalem. Each is part of the whole church. Lastly, and most importantly, God if glorified. And in some small way, we show our thanks for Jesus, and His work on the cross.
