Sermon:
Continuing the theme of being prepared for Christ’s return, Pastor Jim spoke on 2 Peter 3:3-14. He titled this sermon “The Coming Day.” To conclude his series on the end times, Pastor preached on end of time. Using a line, and going from left to right, he explained we are in the church age, which began with Christ. Prophecy contained Scripture tells of the Tribulation after the Rapture, and then the Millennial kingdom. But, what is after that? Pastor explained the day after Millennial kingdom ends is the Day of God. Peter addresses it in today’s Scripture. Pastor expounded on it in three points.
Firstly, Pastor reminded us that the Coming Day, the Day of God is certain. We can be certain because God has said it, and he always fulfilled His word. However, Peter commented on the presence of scoffers. These people believe that things will be same tomorrow as they were yesterday. Pastor commented that these people don’t believe the Bible. Instead their beliefs are guided by emotion. We know this because as Peter points out there is evidence that God acted. He created the world and then flooded it to clean it up. God will act in the future.
Next, Pastor warned us that the coming day of God will be catastrophic. Everything, even matter itself will fall apart. As God recreates a new heaven and a new earth. He can do this as he is an all-powerful God. While He can and will bring this day about, we can take heart in the fact that He is also a patient God. As Pastor remarked, it is very doubtful any of us in the congregation, including himself, would be alive now if God was not patient. We can be grateful, very, for this patience.
Lastly, Pastor asked us to consider that the Coming Day, God’s Day, brings a challenge to us. What can we do with our knowledge of the future. Well scripture teaches us that perhaps we can bring the Day nearer, hasten it. But, how? We can work to make sure all who will hear the Gospel, and believe can certainly do so. In John, Christ uses the picture of a day, night is coming, to exhort those who know him to work now. Another way of putting this concept is to say we should live today in light of the Coming Day.
If we do this, we will examine ourselves and do our part to remove our “spots and blemishes” and do our part in cooperating with the Lord, we can help with the only two eternal things, the Bible and people.
