Announcements:
Next Sunday is Shoe Box Sunday as the Awana children will pack boxes on Wednesday. Thank you to all who contributed. If any one wants to contribute to shipping cost that will likely be $400, please mark your contribution for that.
Our church will celebrate Thanksgiving with a meal after church on November 20. We will all enjoy the blessings of food and fellowship then give thanks to the Lord through song and testimonies. Please let your family and friends know and invite them to join us. Be sure to sign up if you plan on coming, and for what dish you are bringing. Lastly, if you would like to provide a musical special, please let Pastor know.
November 8th is the election day. This election gives us a chance to deal with the last two years. After prayerful consideration as to what Jesus would wish for His Kingdom, please go out and vote so we can do what we can for our country, our neighbors and ourselves to create the Kingdom of God where Jesus is honored.
Melissa Mattingly, a missionary with Ethnos 360 whom we support sent a letter providing an update. It is in foyer if you wish to read it.
Sermon:
Pastor shifted gears to match the transition in Isaiah away from the problem of idolatry to the reality of God by studying His attributes in a sermon titled “God Is …” Before preaching to us on God’s attributes, Pastor provided context by remarking that his professor in seminary said that students often found his class on the theology of God toasty, or dry. But, Pastor remarked that this dryness comes from thinking we know all about God because we’ve been hearing about him since we were kindergarten, and perhaps we think we’ve heard it all before. Putting aside this fallacy, Pastor started with the proposition that “comfort comes in knowing who God is.”
To fully understand our comfort, Pastor started with the idea that God is great. He explained we can know this in two ways. In the first way, we can see the greatness of God in nature. Isaiah portrayed this in terms of scale, suggesting that God could hold all the water in the world in the cup of one hand, Isaiah 40:12. We also see it in the Psalms 19:1 with comparison to the heavens, all the stars and God measuring the span of the universe in His hand. Paul found this same argument persuasive in Romans, asking people to consider nature and the universe a proof of the existence of God, Romans 1:20.
Besides seeing the greatness of God in nature, Pastor preached that we could also see it in comparison to the nations. They are simply insignificant in terms of control and power. To help us get our minds around this, Pastor asked us to consider how we consider insects like grasshoppers. To God, that is how we must appear in terms of power and size.
If God was only great, that would give us a lot to think about, but Pastor focused us on the goodness of God. He doesn’t treat us like we are grasshoppers that are inconsequential and worth nothing to him. He shows His goodness by reconciling us to him through His Son, Jesus. He provides forgiveness of sins. In addition to this forgiveness, He provides His Word to comfort us, and sustain us while we are here on Earth. That enables us to see His goodness so we can trust Him.
So as we go forth into the week and struggle with the challenges of the world, let us remember this truth: God is great, good and can be trusted.
