In the sermon today, Pastor Jim took as his text Colossians 3:22-4:1 and reminded us that “Our work matters to God.” In this part of the Colossians, after dealing with the family, Paul turned his attention to slaves in the household. These were not slaves like that term is used to refer to slavery in the US. Slaves in the time of the Romans were more like indentured servants, ones that could purchase their freedom. So most analogous to the employer/employee relationship today. Pastor exhorted us in that relationship to always keep the Lord front and center in our thinking and in our work. The reality is that we are all working for the Lord while we are on this side of the grave, so we should use our time wisely, and work in all things as if the Lord was our employer so we can be good and faithful servants.

The sermon fit very well with the first Sunday of the month and communion in that we must always be mindful of the work on the cross that our Lord and Savior did for us, reconciling us to God. With that in perspective, it is a small thing to work hard and smile for an earthly employer.
