Bible Verses for Sunday Service October 08, 2023
Jude 20-21
But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.
Philippians 4:6-7
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Announcements:
Andy & Christy Streit, the missionaries appointees with Baptist Mid-Missions, were with us last week, and we are happy to report that they left with a love offering of $2000 towards their ministry. Please keep them in your prayers as they travel to raise support.
Pray for Dr. Low, the missions director for Acts International who asked us to be praying for the training conference in Siliguri, India. He was on his way to India when he received reports of torrential rains that might make travel impossible through mountain passes that are impassable. This would block the workers from attending the planned meetings with him. Pray that God would overcome these weather difficulties.
For the next several weeks we will have a special study geared for youth on finances. They will be going through the study “Generation Change.” This ministry equips young people to manage their finances in a way to honor God.
Please contribute items to the annual Christmas Child Boxes ministry by Samaritan’s Purse. Our Awana children will pack these boxes on Nov 8th. You will find the list of desired items in the foyer. Please indicate what you can provide.
On October 22, Tom Berry, a member of our congregation, who also steps in for Pastor by preaching will share his testimony, a story of God working in his life during this service.
Our ladies are planning a time of fellowship for October 28th at 11AM that will have a pineapple theme. A luncheon is also planned. Please make sure to mark your calendars and plan on joining us.

The Suttons, Jimmy & Sharon, sang a fun Gospel song in honor of Pastor Appreciation Day “I Catch ’em, God cleans ’em” during Sunday service, October 08, 2023. Written by the Gaither Vocal Band, this song is humorous, good ol’ boy look at salvation and justification. You can watch the video directly here.
Sermon:
Pastor Jim Miller preached on Luke 12:13-21 in a sermon titled “Family Feud,” named after the game show as this section of scripture features Jesus dealing with a member of the audience was involved in a family feud with his brother. This man wanted Him to adjudicate a dispute. Rather than doing that, Jesus continued His sermon about the problems of the Pharisees including a parable about a rich farmer, who also had misplaced priorities. Pastor had two main points to make.
To begin, Pastor reviewed problems in families. The most common problem is fights between siblings over something being shared that one sibling believes is unfair. Here is was sharing of the late father’s estate. While it is easy to spot these disputes, what the root causes are is more difficult to know. Pastor suggested that most of the time the problem is one of covetousness, which is a form of idolatry. We worship our worldly goods and cannot have enough. A cure for this it recognize how God is gracious to us and to be thankful for what we have, just like Solomon advised in Ecclesiastes.
With the problem diagnosed, Pastor moved on to analyze the parable Jesus told of the foolish farmer. He remarked that as a child, his father read a magazine called successful farmer, and the farmer was certainly that. But why foolish? He was successful, but selfish. In the parable, Jesus states that the farmer only used personal pronouns. He had no interest in using his success to help others. Now this success was also sinful. He had made his money honestly, but for all intents and purposes, he was a practical atheist. For the Bible, spends a lot of time in Proverbs describing the fool. He is characterized to lives as if God does not exist. Besides being successful, he was also short-sighted. He had planned for a long life, but God is in control, and God’s plan didn’t provide that.
Pastor asked us to consider where we are headed. Are we making plans now that will help us when we leave this earth and step into glory. These are the type of plans/giving that we can take with us in that we will have the fruits in heaven.
