Just a reminder that we will again be participating in the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Child Box program. So, we will need items for the Awana children to pack in the boxes in November. In the foyer, you will find a sign up sheet with items you could provide by purchasing them. Also, if you prefer, you can support the program by contributing funds instead.

Pastor Jim and Gaylene want to thank everyone for the cards and generous gifts to them for Pastor Appreciation day. We are a blessing to them in so many ways. We thank the Lord for you, and for the opportunity God has given us to minister here.

Specials: Shepherd Bible Church Special October, 20 “Jesus Loves Me”

We were again blessed by the Suttons. Sensing that perhaps we were fed up with the donkey and the elephant, Jimmy Sutton suggested we listen to the lamb. So he and Sharon sang “Jesus loves me.” This song ha a wonderful history. Written by Anna Bartlett Warner in 1860 with music and chorus added in 1862, the song became a children’s favorite. Many talented musicians have covered this song, including the Gaither Trio, the version Jimmy and Sharon sung. You can watch this special here, or below:

Sermon:

Pastor Jim spoke to us on Esther 8-9 in a sermon he titled “God’s Work for His People.” Working through Esther, Pastor now covered the events after the death of Haman. While Haman is gone, is plan to kill all the Jews in the future still is in place. These chapters cover God’s provision to protect the Jews through Esther and Mordecai. Pastor covered this in two points.

Firstly Pastor described the events of these two chapters in terms of the change brought by God. Esther made another unsolicited plea to the king, asking him to reverse Haman’s order. But, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, the king could not do this. Mordecai saw this as an opportunity to turn things around. He had a plan. With the king’s permission, he issued a new edict that stated on the day the Jews were to be killed, the Jews could retaliate and protect themselves. Once the Jews heard of this plan, it changed their perspective from sadness to joy. It also resulted in more converts to Judaism as people recognized the power, God, behind the Jews success.

God’s work in the Jews’ lives prompted a celebration. Going back to the original casting of lots, the Pur, to determine the date of the death of the Jews, a festival was named Purim. By celebrating and making it an annual event, the Jews reminded themselves that it is God that determines our lot, not simple chance or fate. The celebration also reminded the Jews that it was God who delivered them.

To connect this story to us today, Pastor reminded us that God continues to deliver, and he will deliver us. We make our own choices, but He is the one working everything for good.
