We will be packing Christmas Child boxes in Awana, the ministry of Samaritan’s purse. You are welcome to make financial contributions to this end. Alternatively, you can provide items to be packed in the boxes. Look for the list of items to come out shortly, and for the box in the foyer to place items.
Sermon:
In order to prepare out hearts for the special missions speaker next Sunday, Pastor Jim selected as his text Isaiah 42:1-7, and preached on the Messiah’s Ministry. Pastor introduced the idea of the importance of the Messiah’s ministry with a story about a GI that conversed with an islander in the Pacific that was liberated. In enjoying a meal, the GI was lamenting that not much had changed. The islander pointed out that by hearing the Word of God, the islanders had changed, they no longer ate visitors to the island like the GI! So the Word of God brings true and needed change to the world.
In working through his text, Pastor started by connecting the Messiah’s ministry to our upcoming missions speaker, the Messiah’s ministry was a global one. One to bring change to all the world. That change would ultimately bring a just world. But, not before the Messiah’s second coming. This liberates the world, setting it free from enslaving habits, the sin that has corrupted it since the Original sin in Genesis.
Besides being a global ministry, the Messiah’s ministry necessarily demonstrates His character; it is a gentle ministry. Who can forget those comforting words of Matthew 11:28-30, “I am gentle and lowly in heart.” Who would not be comforted by the Messiah showing that part of his character? And, in showing this, this is always action towards others. We have more testimony in scripture on this point. He won’t break a bruised reed, Isaiah 42:3. Now the word picture here is not about being careful with plants, but that no matter how damaged we are, He won’t discard us, He will restore us, and not give up on us.
Another aspect of the Messiah’s ministry we should consider is that it is a guaranteed ministry that will not fail.
Lastly, the Messiah provides this ministry to us; it is a given ministry. We can be a part of this ministry and make it ours. How can we do this? By not forgetting the Great Commission from Matthew 28:16-20. The Messiah offers us to be co-laborers with Him in advancing the Kingdom of God, which is already with us.
In concluding Pastor reminded us through him recollecting a testimony from the Gideons’ banquet of how placing a Bible in a hotel room is one aspect of this. And, how that Bible lead someone desperate for a solutions to the truth. Pastor also connected the Messiah’s mission to next weeks’ speaker, Dr Alvin Low, of ACTS International. We can advance the Kingdom by supporting those that work in hostile places to advance the Kingdom who have not heard.
